Dispatchers are to be alert, authoritative and able to exert whatever means necessary to fulfill their many responsibilities within the guidelines of their department.
When a request is made, the Dispatcher must be able to determine what resources are needed, then compare that to the resources that are available to be sent. Taking of the initial call is one of the must critical steps when deciding who to send or what is needed. You must ensure that all information is complete and correct and that you have all necessary information.
Liabilities can be imposed when procedures are not followed or errors are made in gathering in formation from the caller. A dispatcher who gives pre-arrival instructions that are wrong or that results in harm may have to pay damages.
It is the responsibility of the whole Department to insure and/or to assist the Dispatcher with maintaining an environment free from unnecessary interruptions and/or interference from outside noise that could give an unprofessional image.
